In short
  • The TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) is for family members of active-duty service members, and for National Guard and Reserve members and their families.
  • Active-duty service members get their dental care through active-duty dental benefits, not the TDP.
  • Military retirees use FEDVIP. The old TRICARE Retiree Dental Program ended on 31 December 2018.
  • United Concordia runs the TDP. Call the office and ask whether it is in network before you book.

Who the TRICARE Dental Program covers

The TDP is a voluntary dental plan. You choose to join it and pay monthly premiums. It covers family members of active-duty service members, and National Guard and Reserve members and their families.

Active-duty service members are not in the TDP. Their dental care comes through active-duty dental benefits.

You enroll through milConnect, the Defense Department’s self-service site.

Who runs it

United Concordia runs the TDP under a contract that started on 1 March 2025. When an office says it takes TRICARE dental, it usually means it is in United Concordia’s TDP network.

Offices often list “United Concordia” on their website rather than “TRICARE”. United Concordia also sells other dental plans, so ask the office about the TDP by name.

Retirees: use FEDVIP instead

The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program ended on 31 December 2018. Since then, most military retirees and their families can buy dental coverage through FEDVIP, the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program.

Retirees have 60 days after retiring to sign up. After that, you wait for the yearly open season in November and December. Our FEDVIP guide covers how it works.

Questions to ask when you call

  • Are you in network for the TRICARE Dental Program through United Concordia?
  • If you are booking for a child, do you see children?
  • Are you taking new patients?

The offices on this site that list TRICARE told us so on their own website or listing. Networks change, so the phone call is the final word.
