In short
  • Since 1 January 2023, adults 21 and older with full Medicaid benefits have dental coverage in Maryland.
  • The coverage runs through the Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program, the same program that already covered children.
  • It covers checkups, cleanings, X-rays, fillings and some other treatment. Ask Member Services about a specific procedure.
  • Maryland Healthy Smiles Member Services: 855-934-9812.

What changed in 2023

Before 2023, Maryland Medicaid covered dental care for children and some other groups, but most adults had no dental benefit. On 1 January 2023 the state added dental coverage for adults 21 and older who have full Medicaid benefits.

Adults get this coverage through the Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program, which also covers children.

What it covers

The adult benefit covers the main kinds of dental care:

  • Exams and X-rays
  • Cleanings and other preventive care
  • Fillings and other restorative work
  • Root canals
  • Gum treatment
  • Extractions and some other services

This page does not list every rule for every treatment. Before you agree to a treatment plan, ask the office whether each item is covered, or call Member Services.

Finding a dentist who takes it

Not every dentist takes Maryland Healthy Smiles, so check before you book. The program has its own dentist search at member.mdhealthysmiles.com, and Member Services at 855-934-9812 can help you find one.

The offices on this site that list Healthy Smiles said so on their own website or listing. When you call, say “Maryland Healthy Smiles” and ask whether they are taking new adult patients.

If you are not sure you have full Medicaid

Some Medicaid coverage groups do not include the full benefit package. If you are not sure which coverage you have, call Maryland Healthy Smiles Member Services before your appointment and ask whether you have dental benefits.
